iOS 27 and iPhone Innovations

Apple unveiled iOS 27 with a focus on system responsiveness and a revamped Liquid Glass design that now includes a transparency slider for users to adjust opacity levels. The update introduces extra-large widgets for the Home Screen and Today View, alongside new app icon designs for several system applications. Productivity is further bolstered by natural language support in Calendar and Reminders, as well as a new "Create a Pass" feature in the Wallet app that utilizes Visual Intelligence.

Hardware compatibility for the update remains broad, as Apple maintained support for the iPhone 11 and all newer models. However, the most advanced on-device AI models will be restricted to the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air, as these require 12GB of unified memory. Meanwhile, code found in the first developer beta hints at a foldable iPhone with subroutines that report the angle of a folding screen and new app resizability frameworks.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence

The centerpiece of WWDC 2026 is the rebranding of Siri as "Siri AI", which introduces a dedicated Siri app and a highly customizable voice with adjustable pace and expressiveness. This new system leverages foundation models that Apple insists are developed internally and do not use Gemini code, though the company is partnering with Google and NVIDIA to run Private Cloud Compute (PCC) on Google's servers.

Apple Intelligence is expanding into several core apps, including smarter writing tools for Mail and Messages and AI-driven tab organization in Safari, which now includes a "Notify Me" feature to track webpage changes. The Passwords app can now automatically fix weak passwords using agentic AI, and the Shortcuts app now builds automations from natural language descriptions. Despite these advances, Siri AI will be delayed in the European Union and China due to the Digital Markets Act.

Hardware and Ecosystem Updates

The company launched mac OS Golden Gate 27, which drops support for Intel Macs to focus entirely on Apple Silicon. This version adds explicit ultrawide display support for higher resolutions and integrates Siri AI directly into Spotlight. For iPad users, iPad OS 27 introduces "Liquid Glass" improvements and productivity upgrades, though the update cuts support for several older models.

The Apple Watch ecosystem sees the release of watch OS 27, which adds Workout Buddy insights and improved indoor run tracking. While the update drops support for the Series, Ultra, and SE 2, Apple later clarified that the Series 9 is indeed compatible after an initial omission from the official list. For audio users, AirPods are gaining a custom EQ and heart rate synchronization via iOS 27. In the developer space, the Game Porting Toolkit 4 now supports agentic coding to simplify Mac ports, and a new Foundation Models framework provides image input support for developers.

Betas and Market Availability

Developer betas for iOS, iPad OS, mac OS, watch OS, tv OS, and vision OS 27 are now available for download. However, access to the new Siri AI is currently gated by a waitlist. In the retail market, early Prime Day deals have slashed the Apple Watch Series 11 to $299, while B&H is selling MacBook Airs for $899.
