AirPods Custom EQ Arrives in iOS 26 After Years of Waiting

Apple will finally add a custom equalizer to AirPods as part of its fall 2026 operating system updates, marking the first time users can manually adjust sound signatures. The feature, unveiled during the WWDC 2026 keynote, lets owners boost bass, treble, or tweak frequencies to match their preferences.

This long-requested addition addresses criticism that AirPods sound profiles were too bass-heavy for some listeners. For years, competitors like Sony and Bose offered customizable EQ settings while Apple users relied on automatic adjustments through Adaptive Audio and Conversational Awareness modes.

The custom EQ works through iOS 26 software rather than requiring new hardware, meaning most existing AirPods models should support the feature. Users can create personalized sound profiles that persist across devices once configured.

Apple plans to release the update alongside iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate this fall, giving the company months to refine the implementation before public launch.
