Apple is finally delivering custom equalizer settings for AirPods in iOS 27, ending years of resistance to user-adjustable audio profiles. The feature works through Settings > AirPods > Audio & Routing > Equalizer > Custom, letting users tweak lows, mids, and highs. Only AirPods with the H2 chip gain access, including AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2.

The settings menu gets a complete overhaul with better organization and a new volume slider alongside quick-access modes for Transparency, Noise Cancellation, and Adaptive settings. Controls now group into categories like Audio & Routing, Hearing Health, and Controls & Gestures. Siri AI integration lets users ask questions through their AirPods while connected to an iPhone, though it requires Apple Intelligence-compatible hardware.

AirPods Pro 3 gain exclusive features including Precision Finding with Ultra Wideband in the charging case, plus GymKit syncing that transmits heart rate data to compatible gym equipment. An accessibility addition called Name Recognition alerts deaf or hard-of-hearing users when their name is spoken, supporting over 50 languages.

These updates require updated AirPods firmware alongside iOS 27, which launches this September. Developers can access the beta now, with public testing beginning in July. The expanded feature set strengthens Apple's wireless ecosystem ahead of fall hardware releases.
