iOS 27 adds extra-large widgets for richer home screens

Apple unveiled iOS 27 at WWDC, adding a suite of features that range from a new Siri AI to refined search. Among the quieter updates is an extra‑large widget size for Today View and Home Screen. The new 4×6 canvas dwarfs the existing 4×4 large widget, giving apps substantially more real‑estate for glanceable data on the lock screen as well.

Beyond widgets, iOS 27 introduces independent volume controls for alarms, timers, alerts, and system sounds, letting users fine‑tune audio without affecting other cues. Apple’s built‑in widgets are the first to adopt the extra‑large format, but the company expects third‑party developers to follow suit before the fall rollout. The resize handle lets users expand or shrink widgets on the fly instantly today.

The larger widget slot directly addresses complaints that existing sizes limit information density, especially for productivity and health apps. By offering a 4×6 area, developers can display richer charts, calendars, or multi‑step controls without launching the full app. As iOS 27 lands this fall, users will see immediate visual upgrades on their home screens across all iPhone models starting next week.
