Apple Image Playground Gets Photorealistic AI Generation and Advanced Editing

Apple unveiled a major Image Playground update at WWDC 2026, bringing photorealistic image generation to the app for the first time. The new generative model runs on Private Cloud Compute and can produce high-quality images across virtually any style. Every generated image automatically includes a hidden SynthID watermark to identify AI-created content.

The overhaul adds robust photo editing capabilities beyond basic creation. Users can now describe modifications to existing images or apply touch gestures like tapping and brushing to manipulate specific objects. Photo libraries can be tapped for including people in generated scenes, and images transform into different styles through text prompts.

New sharing destinations expand the app's utility within iOS. Generated images work as Lock Screen wallpapers and Contact Posters, moving beyond Messages integration. Aspect ratio selection lets creators optimize for specific use cases like website headers or flyers without additional cropping.

Third-party developers gain access via the Image Playground API, enabling integration of photorealistic generation and editing tools directly into their applications. This positions Apple's AI image technology as a platform feature rather than a standalone app, potentially accelerating adoption across the iOS ecosystem.
