Apple Adds Generative AI Photo Tools to iOS 27

Apple is upgrading the Photos app across iPhone, Mac, and Vision Pro with new generative AI capabilities. These updates include a revamped Clean Up tool and two entirely new features called Extend and Reframe. These tools will arrive later this year as part of iOS 27 and corresponding software updates.

Clean Up now handles object removal in complex scenes by combining on-device processing with cloud models. The new Extend tool generates fresh content around the borders of an image to expand its frame. Meanwhile, Reframe allows users to adjust a photo's angle or zoom out using multi-touch gestures before sending the file to a server.

Moving some processing to the cloud marks a shift from Apple's previous focus on purely on-device AI. This hybrid approach allows the software to handle more demanding generative tasks that local hardware cannot process alone. Users can now modify image composition and remove distractions with higher precision than previous versions allowed.

These updates integrate generative filling and perspective shifting directly into the native gallery. This removes the need for third-party apps to perform basic generative expansion or object removal. The system relies on a mix of local and server-side computation to execute these changes.
