Apple rolls out AI photo tools in iOS 27

Apple is rolling out a suite of on‑device AI photo tools in the upcoming iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 updates. The new Apple Intelligence section in Photos adds three options—Extend, Enhance and Reframe—joining the existing Clean Up feature. Users will find the controls alongside the usual editing sliders, letting the system adjust composition and lighting with a single tap.

Extend generates additional scenery beyond the original frame, letting a pinch‑zoom gesture pull new background content into view. Enhance runs a proprietary algorithm that tweaks color balance, exposure and contrast automatically, similar to the current auto‑edit mode. Reframe works on spatial photos, permitting post‑capture perspective shifts that mimic a physical camera move. The workflow remains fully offline, preserving user privacy while leveraging the Neural Engine.

Apple’s AI tools have lagged behind rivals; Clean Up still struggles with complex object removal, and Bloomberg notes that Extend and Reframe may ship delayed or in reduced form. Nonetheless, integrating on‑device intelligence across three OS platforms signals a broader push to keep photo editing native to Apple hardware rather than relying on third‑party apps. iOS 27 will debut at WWDC 2026 on June 8.
