iOS 27 Photos Gets Major AI Upgrade

Apple is introducing significant AI-powered upgrades to Photos in iOS 27, bringing capabilities that previously required specialized software. The new Extend tool expands photos beyond their original frame, while Spatial Reframing adjusts perspective after capture. These features directly address common photography problems like tight framing and awkward angles, allowing users to improve shots without specialized equipment.

The Cleanup feature enhances object removal, letting users eliminate unwanted people or distractions from photos with more natural results than earlier versions. Apple is also transforming Image Playground from primarily a generation tool into an editor that can modify existing images through natural language prompts. This shift makes the feature more practical for everyday photo editing tasks.

Google, Samsung, and Adobe already offer similar AI editing capabilities, positioning Apple's Photos upgrade as a response to industry trends. The new tools focus on improving existing photos rather than generating new content, a practical approach for users with existing photo libraries. These features are currently available in developer betas, with public releases planned for this fall.
