The Memphis Grizzlies mourn forward Brandon Clarke, whose death was ruled accidental due to the effects of heroin and cocaine. In college basketball, UConn’s Dan Hurley sounded the alarm on late roster additions harming the sport. On the high school front, top prospect Ahmed Nur earned an exclusive ticket to the NBA’s offseason retreat, “The Sanctuary.” The NCAA and FBI partnered to fight athlete sexual exploitation. In the Senate, the Protect College Sports Act failed to reach a vote but gained a spot on September’s calendar. Ohio State landed a commitment from four-star quarterback Christopher Vargas, the top pocket passer in the 2028 class.

WNBA

The Minnesota Lynx continue to dominate: Kayla McBride set the WNBA single-game 3-point record with 10 makes in a 103-90 win over Dallas. The Lynx later clinched a playoff berth with their 26th victory. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Aces rested stars A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray for a back-to-back in New York. Caitlin Clark of the Fever had her eighth technical foul rescinded quickly, avoiding suspension. The WNBA is also embroiled in a transgender controversy after Sophie Cunningham’s comments. England opener Emilio Gay is set to be fit for the first Test against Pakistan. In one-day internationals, Afghanistan beat Ireland to take a 2-0 lead. Scotland scraped past UAE by one wicket with one ball left. In the One-Day Cup, Middlesex advanced as Group A saw upsets. Glamorgan found positives despite poor results. In The Hundred, Trent Rockets face a nervous wait after a defeat to Southern Brave. Sunrisers Leeds moved closer to qualification with a 71-run win. Jackson Koivun, with just six starts, booked the final FedEx Cup playoff spot after leaving Auburn in June and winning the 3M Open. At the PIF London Championship, Charley Hull let slip a one-shot lead as 17-year-old Anna Huang won her fourth Ladies European Tour event. An amateur golfer resigned from his club after a fake hole-in-one scandal.

Boxing / MMA

Callum Simpson avenged his only loss by reclaiming the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles in a rematch with Troy Williamson. In MMA, Dakota Ditcheva revealed she broke both hands again during her win over Denise Kielholtz.

At the Canadian Open, world number one Aryna Sabalenka suffered a surprise defeat, and Britain’s Cameron Norrie also exited. In snooker, Judd Trump lost to Noppon Saengkham at the China Open, while Shaun Murphy set a scoring record.
