Ohio State has secured the top pocket passer in the 2028 recruiting cycle, four‑star quarterback Christopher Vargas. The 6‑foot‑4, 185‑pound prospect from Lawrence, Massachusetts, is ESPN’s No. 14 overall recruit. Vargas completed 66.7% of his passes for 2,038 yards and 24 touchdowns to three interceptions in his sophomore season at Saint John’s Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts, and announced his Buckeyes pledge via social media on Saturday amid strong interest from Auburn, Boston College, Miami, Oregon, Texas A&M, USC, Virginia Tech and Washington.

With Vargas on board, head coach Ryan Day now holds pledges from four of ESPN’s top 100 prospects in the 2028 cycle—more than any other FBS program. The new recruit is the second‑ranked member of Ohio State’s class, trailing only four‑star receiver Jett Harrison (No. 6 overall). Other 2028 commitments include defensive tackle Jameer Whyce (No. 16 overall) and four‑star running back Elijah Newman‑Hall (No. 90).

Vargas cannot sign until December 2027, but his arrival adds depth to a roster that already features former five‑star quarterback Tavien St. Clair, three‑star freshman Luke Fahey, and returning starter Julian Sayin. The Buckeyes’ 2027 class, led by four top‑15 prospects, sits at No. 7 in ESPN’s latest rankings for the cycle.
