Spain's Technical Committee of Referees said Lee Kang-In should have been sent off in Sunday's Madrid derby, while backing the decision not to show Cristian Romero a red card. Atlético Madrid won 2-1 at the Metropolitano, but Real Madrid coach José Mourinho slammed referee Miguel Ortiz Arias afterwards.

Lee's challenge on Federico Valverde caused a grade three ankle sprain, forcing him out of Uruguay's squad. Romero's clash with Jude Bellingham, treading on his knee, saw Romero get a yellow after VAR intervention. Both came in the first half at 0-0.

In its weekly review, the CTA assessed those incidents and a red card for Madrid's Dean Huijsen, which led to a penalty Atlético converted. The CTA said Huijsen had "grabbed the arm" of Giuliano Simeone "without the possibility of playing the ball" and the red was correct.

The CTA said Lee's challenge had a "high risk of injury" for Valverde and the failure to show red was a "clear and obvious error" VAR should have corrected. It also said VAR acted correctly in ensuring Romero was shown a yellow.

Mourinho slammed the referee and VAR, saying Ortiz Arias "couldn't cope with the pressure" and VAR had a "big history" with Real Madrid. The loss left Madrid fourth in La Liga, six points behind leaders Barcelona after seven games.
