Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi has died of suspected heatstroke after a training session with his club Kyuden Voltex in Fukuoka, Japan. The 26-year-old back rower was taken to hospital and died on Friday, 7 August. Temperatures in Fukuoka reached 35C degrees that week.

The club stated that after practice on 3 August, Vunilagi displayed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke and was transported to a medical facility, but passed away despite efforts. The team expressed devastation and condolences.

Vunilagi had recently joined Kyuden Voltex from Tokyo Sungoliath in Japan Rugby League One. Although he had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style raised high hopes for the upcoming season. He was 6ft 5in and 117kg, attended university in Japan, and began his professional career in 2023.
