After limping off in Swansea City's Carabao Cup defeat to Birmingham City, Cameron Burgess suffered a significant Achilles injury, raising fears of a long lay‑off. The 21‑year‑old made his first competitive start for the Swans at right‑back before being replaced by Josh Key in the second half, but the injury has left the club scrambling for cover.

Summer signing Stephen Welsh, who was on the bench during the match, could step into the centre‑back role at Stoke, while manager Mattos said he also has the option of moving Filip Lissah to the position. “Welshy is more than ready to come in and we can still play Lissah at centre‑back, so there are plenty of options,” Mattos said.

Swansea had already been in the market for a new centre‑back before Burgess’ injury.
