Charles Leclerc will not use Ferrari's latest Formula 1 engine spec at the Spanish GP due to his Monza crash. The 067/6 unit, with the second package of FIA-permitted modifications, was deemed sound, but Ferrari does not want to risk running it at the Madring. F1 rules prohibit running an engine that cannot be worked on in all homologated components. No cracks were found externally, but further X-ray exams are planned.

The decision is logical: the Madring is new, drivers need maximum running, and engineers need data. The circuit is 667 metres above sea level, similar to the Red Bull Ring, so the larger turbo compressor in the ADUO2 package could have helped in thinner air. Any issues in Friday practice could compromise the GP, so the engine's return is postponed until FP1 in Baku.

Leclerc will use an ADUO1 engine, while Lewis Hamilton can use ADUO2 normally. Ferrari hopes the SF-26 suits Madrid's medium-to-high downforce and low-grip asphalt. With 22 corners, battery recharge is easier than at Monza, reducing the power deficit to Mercedes. Qualifying will be crucial as overtaking is nearly impossible. If needed, Leclerc could take a fifth power unit and a penalty to ensure reliability.
