India's Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has escalated its probe into Apple over alleged issues caused by the iOS 18 update released in 2024. According to Reuters, the update reportedly led to screen display and microphone malfunctions on some iPhones, forcing customers to pay for repairs since no warranty covers software issues.

Apple has denied the allegations, stating that not offering software warranties is standard industry practice. The company argues the case is based on only 75 complaints and that no systemic issues or safety concerns were found with iOS 18 in India. Apple further contends that requiring software-related problems to be warranty-covered would effectively make it an insurer against all technological risks.

The CCPA remains unconvinced, accusing Apple of violating consumer rights as a class and potentially engaging in unfair trade practices by charging customers for repairs due to problems allegedly caused by Apple's own software. If found guilty, Apple could face fines, refunds, or mandated changes to business practices.

This investigation is one of several recent regulatory challenges Apple faces in India, including an ongoing antitrust case with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that could result in a $38 billion fine.
