Canon has unveiled the EOS R8 II, a 24-megapixel entry-level full-frame camera featuring retro styling borrowed from the classic EOS 650 SLR film camera. The squared-off design includes an angled right corner and horizontal shutter button area when paired with the optional battery grip. It is now Canon's lightest full-frame camera with 5-axis in-body stabilization at 1.2 pounds (546 grams), offering up to 7.5 stops of shake reduction.

Performance sees a major boost: the R8 II shoots at 40 fps in electronic shutter mode with continuous AF/AE, capturing 58 percent more JPEGs and 30 percent more RAW frames per burst. Autofocus upgrades include Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 100 percent coverage, subject tracking for people, animals, and vehicles, plus the ability to register specific faces for priority tracking—a feature previously reserved for the EOS R6 III. Pre-continuous shooting captures up to 20 frames before full shutter press.

Video specs remain strong with oversampled 4K 60p from 6K, uncropped 1080p at 180 fps, and 10-bit 4:2:2 Canon Log3. New film looks include Positive/Negative Filmtone and Night Scene. The body features a vari-angle touchscreen, 2.36M-dot EVF, single UHS-II slot, and LP-E17 battery rated for 340 shots. The EOS R8 II is available for pre-order at $1,899 (body only) or $2,099 with the RF24-50mm kit lens, shipping late October.
