Samsung's Big Week

Samsung dominated the mobile news cycle this week, headlined by Galaxy Unpacked where the company unveiled the Galaxy S26 FE. The device, which launches September 3rd at $700, is essentially a more affordable version of the S26+ with slightly reduced specs, powered by a new Exynos 2500 chipset and loaded with One UI 9 AI features. The company also announced a new promotion: T-Mobile is offering four free Galaxy S26 phones and four lines for just $25/month per line on its Essentials plan. Meanwhile, an overdue August security patch is rolling out to fix the "red stain" problem affecting the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

leaks and rumors for the next generation are already picking up steam. CAD renders of the Galaxy S27 have leaked online, showing a design that remains largely unchanged. The S27 and S27 Pro leaks suggest Samsung is saving its more ambitious design work for the Pro and Ultra models. And on the battery front, Samsung reportedly decided against a 7,000 mAh battery for the Galaxy S27 Ultra due to concerns about thickness and weight.

Displays and Monitors

Samsung also brought the heat to the desktop with a new lineup of Odyssey gaming monitors. The lineup includes a curved 49-inch 360Hz OLED monitor sporting a 32:9 aspect ratio, as well as a 27-inch IPS monitor boasting a staggering 1,100Hz refresh rate. ASUS is also targeting esports players with new Ace gaming monitors, all featuring 24.5-inch OLED panels with refresh rates up to 720Hz. For those seeking something arguably more practical, the Alienware 39 5K delivers what The Verge calls the ultrawide gaming monitor sweet spot, offering more vertical screen space than typical ultrawides.

Xiaomi and Redmi

Xiaomi has launched its global Redmi Note 17 series. The base Redmi Note 17 and 17 5G are nearly identical, save for the 5G connectivity, with a focus on big batteries and displays. The Pro models, specifically the Redmi Note 17 Pro and Pro Max, feature silicon-carbon batteries (8,340mAh and 9,000mAh) and Snapdragon 6 chips. Android and Software

Google is adding support for Encrypted Client Hello on Android, a privacy feature that encrypts more of the connection handshake process. Over at Oppo, the company has begun seeding its ColorOS 16 August update with new features like AI Remix Collage and security improvements. Nothing has also released the first open beta of Nothing OS 5.0 based on Android 17 for the Phone. The Fitbit Air gets a cute sleep upgrade with a Pokémon Sleep edition, complete with a Pikachu-themed design that tracks your sleep into in-game rewards. Google is also releasing a special edition Pokémon Sleep Fitbit Air in September. Meanwhile, Panic is refunding tariff fees to Playdate owners, and Soundcore's new Nebula X1S projector pushes 6,000 lumens of brightness for daylight viewing.

The NFL and X have teamed up to launch a football feed, and Roku will stream select NWSL matches for free through The Roku Channel. For gamers, Devolver's Volvy's Adventure Re: Slime'd launches the same day as GTA VI. Netflix is also showing the exclusive GTA VI trailer tomorrow on the platform.
