CEOs Push to Reduce DMs, Boost Group Chats for AI

One of the many things that stuck with me from our last conversation with Box CEO Aaron Levie was this: “Company cultures are going to have to get better at, like, writing down decisions, writing down best practices, writing down business processes.” The market will force that change on any company that wants to become AI-first, he explained during a visit to the WSJ CIO Dinner.

Tech CEOs are indeed taking this issue seriously. In a story published last night, the Journal’s Lindsay Ellis and Allison Pohle described how some leaders have focused their ire on direct messages between employees. CEOs realize that AI agents can’t automate what they don’t know, and private messages in Slack or Zoom are data silos.

Executives are asking employees to move chats to group threads and share meeting transcripts in public channels so AI can access them. Zapier CEO Wade Foster ran a friendly competition among execs, while Salesforce’s Joe Inzerillo said his team has adopted the practice internally. The goal is efficiency: agents can pull facts from Slack transcripts instead of recalling from memory.

Risks remain. Some worry that moving conversation to public spaces could inhibit early‑stage brainstorming and reduce the spontaneity of private “spitballing.” The impact on free‑flowing discussion is unclear.
