Europe faces a significant potato shortage following summer heatwaves that destroyed approximately 3.1mn tonnes of potatoes, valued between €400mn and €620mn, according to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit. Production across Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands — Europe's primary potato-growing nations — is projected to drop from a record 27.3mn tonnes in 2025 to between 19.5mn and 20.5mn tonnes this year. Craig Elliott, market analyst at Expana, described the swing from last year's glut to this year's deficit as "potato drama." French yields are the lowest in over 30 years, with some regions seeing 20% declines.

Farmer Jean-Paul Dallene near Arras reported no rain for over two months and temperatures above 30C halting growth. Many potatoes are too small for processing, leading manufacturers to relax size specifications, meaning consumers will see smaller fries. About 80% of processing potatoes are sold under pre-negotiated contracts, locking farmers into lower prices agreed before the drought.

While contract prices were cut by roughly 25% due to last year's surplus, spot market prices have surged to €250 per tonne, creating a stark disconnect for growers.
