Texans Release Safety Jimmie Ward After Offseason Turmoil

The Houston Texans are set to release veteran safety Jimmie Ward, according to sources, as the team looks to move on from a tumultuous offseason. The decision will save the Texans $750,000 in salary cap space, a modest but welcome financial adjustment as they reshape their defensive backfield. Ward, who joined the team in 2023 during DeMeco Ryans' first season as head coach, did not play in the 2025 season after being placed on the physically unable to perform list.

Ward's absence stemmed from both a foot surgery recovery and off-field legal issues that began in June 2025. He was arrested in Montgomery County, Texas, on suspicion of third-degree felony domestic violence. The woman involved later filed a lawsuit alleging she was "violently assaulted multiple times, both sexually and physically" by Ward in front of their 3-year-old child. The NFL placed Ward on the commissioner exempt list in August, though he was removed in September after a grand jury declined to indict him.

In August, Ward faced a second arrest for violating release conditions by testing positive for alcohol, resulting in a night in jail. Despite these challenges, Ward had been productive in his two seasons with Houston, recording 98 tackles, seven pass breakups, and three interceptions—including one returned for a touchdown—in 20 games. The Texans' decision to release him signals the end of a brief but eventful tenure marked by both on-field contributions and significant off-field distractions.
