The Washington Commanders have fired tight ends coach Ben Steele following his arrest for driving while intoxicated. Steele was charged with DWI and obstruction/resisting without force in Loudoun County, Virginia, on June 7. He reportedly refused a blood/breath test and was released on his own recognizance.

Steele was placed on leave by the team shortly after his arrest, missing the final OTA workouts and minicamp. Wes Welker and David Raih, who was promoted to pass game coordinator, worked with the tight ends during his absence. Washington had hired Steele in the offseason to coach the tight ends, a role previously held by Raih.

Prior to joining the Commanders, Steele spent three years on the Arizona Cardinals' staff, contributing to Trey McBride's development. He also has coaching experience with the Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, and Denver Broncos, and played for six NFL organizations from 2001 to 2006.
