The Washington Commanders have promoted former All-Pro receiver Wes Welker to coach tight ends after firing Ben Steele on Monday. Welker, who joined Washington's staff in 2025 as a personnel analyst and was elevated to offensive assistant this offseason, worked with the tight ends in the spring when Steele was suspended following his arrest for driving while intoxicated in Loudoun County, Va.

Coach Dan Quinn said they haven't settled on Welker's official title but he will lead the position group. Pass game coordinator David Raih also worked with the tight ends the past two seasons and in the spring. Steele was pulled over at 1:15 a.m. on June 7 for suspicion of DWI, refused breath and blood tests, and was charged with resisting and obstruction without force. He has a court date on Aug. 13.

Welker led the NFL in receptions three times as a slot receiver with New England, earning five Pro Bowls and four All-Pro selections, including two first-team honors. He previously coached receivers for San Francisco from 2019-21 and the Miami Dolphins before joining Washington.
