Indianapolis Colts cornerback Charvarius Ward reversed course and is back for 2026 after nearly walking away from the NFL. Two seasons defined by tragedy and injury — including the 2024 death of his 23-month-old daughter Amani Joy — pushed Ward to the brink. After spending 2025 on injured reserve with severe concussions and playing a career-low seven games, he openly contemplated retirement.

Ward described battling depression during training camp when he was separated from family in Texas. His fiancée, Monique Cook, stayed near Dallas to care for their home after Amani's death, leaving Ward isolated in Indiana. "I was having those thoughts, 'Man, I don't know if I can do it,'" he said. The mental toll compounded physical injuries, prompting him to question whether continuing was worth the long-term health risks.

Now Ward enters 2026 with his family close by, including a 17-month-old son. He said he's playing for Amani Joy and that her memory has shifted from a source of pain to fuel. "I think about her. I have a lot of good memories," Ward said, adding he and Sauce Gardner aim to form one of the NFL's best secondaries.
