2026 Subaru Uncharted EV: FWD, badge engineering, and solid-state future

Subaru's 2026 Uncharted EV arrives as a front-wheel-drive model, marking the first FWD Subaru in the US since 1997. The electric crossover shares its platform with Toyota's bZ Woodland and Subaru's own Solterra, representing a continuation of the brands' decade-long partnership. With a base price of $34,995, the FWD Uncharted offers a class-leading range of 308 miles.

Despite the familiar styling that closely resembles its Toyota sibling, the Uncharted brings practical advantages. The lighter weight—just 4,145 lbs for the Premium FWD model—translates to more nimble handling compared to heavier EVs. The dual-motor AWD version delivers 338 hp and hits 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while the single-motor FWD version produces 221 hp. Subaru partnered with Panasonic on solid-state battery development, though that technology won't arrive until the Solterra replacement.

The Uncharted includes modern features like a NACS charging port for access to Tesla Superchargers, plus Subaru's X-Mode and Grip Control for off-road capability. The 8.2 inches of ground clearance and electronic traction control systems proved capable on muddy terrain during testing. While badge engineering typically signals cost-cutting, the Uncharted's approach—reusing proven technology while adding unique features—delivers a compelling package that balances affordability, efficiency, and Subaru's adventurous brand identity.
