Chevrolet's hybrid Corvette lineage continues with the new Grand Sport X, replacing the discontinued E-Ray. The new model features a more powerful electric motor borrowed from the ZR1X, delivering 186 hp up front, paired with a new 6.7 L LS6 V8 that produces 40 more hp and 50 lb-ft more torque than the E-Ray's engine. Combined, the Grand Sport X generates 721 hp and significantly more torque than its predecessor. Lead development engineer Keith Badgley noted that E-Ray owners often tracked their cars, revealing the previous model's limitations for performance driving. Software revisions to the adaptive suspension, stability control, and electronic differential create a sharper, more aggressive driving experience. The predictive algorithm allows the front axle to help pull the car through corners, reducing understeer. Hardware changes are minimal between the E-Ray and Grand Sport X, with the same dampers, springs, and bars maintained. Interior updates include a new 12.7-inch touchscreen and revised center console, though wireless charging had issues during testing. The widebody design and performance upgrades like carbon-ceramic brakes and optional carbon fiber wheels maintain the Grand Sport tradition of using the base engine with premium upgrades. Despite the added weight and complexity, the car retains everyday usability with adaptive dampers smoothing out rough roads.

The Grand Sport X represents a significant shift from the E-Ray's grand touring focus toward pure performance, while maintaining the Corvette's signature characteristics. Badgley emphasized that customers who tracked E-Rays found the car "a little tight" for track use, prompting the team to free up the car's dynamics through software and powertrain improvements.

Production occurs at the Bowling Green, Kentucky plant, where pre-production testing revealed substantial driving differences despite shared hardware foundations. The predictive control systems now better utilize the hybrid powertrain's instant torque delivery.

This evolution mirrors Porsche's approach with the 911, expanding performance variants without diluting the core model's appeal. The new LS6 V8 will also serve as the base engine for future Stingray models, continuing the Grand Sport tradition of introducing fresh powerplants.
