The Cleveland Browns have named Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback for the 2026 NFL season, ending a competition with second-year signal-caller Shedeur Sanders. First-year head coach Todd Monken announced the decision on Monday, stating it was based solely on giving the team the best opportunity for Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This move marks another significant risk for owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager Andrew Berry. Sixteen months after acquiring Watson via a trade involving three first-round picks and a fully guaranteed $230 million contract, the organization is betting on his return from a right Achilles tendon tear that sidelined him for all of 2025. Watson acknowledged the gravity of the situation, telling reporters, "I have another shot... I wanna make sure I take full responsibility of this opportunity."

Financial constraints heavily influenced the roster construction. Releasing Watson immediately would trigger an NFL-record $127 million dead salary cap charge. Waiting until next offseason allows the Browns to split a more manageable $86 million charge across 2027 and 2028. Despite these cap considerations, Monken emphasized that the choice was his own, made in consultation with Berry and ownership.

Watson’s tenure has been marred by injuries and poor performance, posting a 33.1 Total QBR in 19 games since joining Cleveland. He recently faced boos in his home stadium debut since the injury, calling the reaction "disrespectful." With a strong class of QB prospects looming in the 2027 draft, the franchise continues its search for a long-term solution beyond the current one-year deal.
