The Chicago Cubs reinstated right-hander Edward Cabrera from the 15-day injured list Saturday. Manager Craig Counsell immediately moved the 28-year-old pitcher to the bullpen. Cabrera, acquired from the Miami Marlins in an offseason trade, has endured a turbulent season.

He went on the IL Aug. 17 with a right middle finger blister, later suffering a left hamstring/adductor strain in New York. He made three rehab appearances with Triple-A Iowa before Saturday's roster move. In a corresponding move, the Cubs placed righty Trent Thornton on the 15-day IL with a left ankle sprain.

Thornton, 5-5 with three saves and a 3.35 ERA in 48⅓ innings over 48 relief appearances, joins the injured list. Cabrera is 5-5 with a 5.68 ERA in 76 innings over 15 games, all starts, this season. The righty was hurt doing a split while stretching for a throw as he covered first base against the Mets.
