Cubs aim to reinforce rotation as Cabrera, Boyd near comeback

Edward Cabrera is slated to start this weekend, giving Chicago its first healthy arm since a blister forced him onto the 15‑day IL on May 24. Left‑hander Matthew Boyd will make a second rehab start for Triple‑A Iowa on Saturday, with a prompt promotion if the outing goes well. Manager Craig Counsell emphasized the urgency of restoring healthy bodies to the staff.

Cabrera, acquired in a January trade with Miami, posted a 3‑2 record and a 4.00 ERA over ten starts in his inaugural season. Boyd, who signed a $29 million two‑year deal in December 2024, is 2‑1 with a 6.00 ERA after returning from a biceps strain and left‑knee surgery. Both pitchers have battled recurring injuries that have strained the Cubs' rotation.

The club also shuffled arms on the roster: right‑hander Tyler Ferguson was recalled from Iowa, while left‑hander Jordan Wicks, who struggled with 11 runs in 6⅓ innings, was optioned. With Cade Horton out for the season and Justin Steele’s recovery uncertain, the return of Cabrera and Boyd could stabilize a staff that has hampered Chicago’s playoff push.
