The Formula 1 Commission has approved reducing race distances from 305km to 290km for the 2027 season, pending FIA World Motor Sport Council approval. This change aligns with revised power unit rules, increasing internal combustion engine output to 420kW while reducing MGU-K power to 300kW (350kW in overtake mode). Fuel flow increases by five percent to support higher ICE output without enlarging fuel tanks.

The adjustment will typically remove about three laps per race. For 2028, ICE power is set to rise to 450kW with a 13% fuel flow increase, requiring larger tanks. Additional changes include removing the three-hour window for red-flag delays, implementing a hard stop time for daylight considerations, and allowing extended practice sessions.

Gearbox homologation is rescinded for 2027, permitting ongoing transmission development. The FIA states these changes aim to ensure spectators can enjoy full races despite disruptions, citing the Spanish Grand Prix FP3 session loss due to incidents involving Lewis Hamilton and Ollie Bearman.
