Microsoft Patent Reveals Ads During Game Loading Screens

Microsoft has filed a patent application titled "Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access" (US 2026/0260258 A1) for a system that would display ads in PC and console games during natural breaks like after boss fights, cutscenes, or on loading screens. The system proposes an initial ad-free window — either time-based (e.g., 30 minutes) or progress-based — after which the game signals a content management system to play an ad at a suitable pause. Watching the ad earns a "credit" delaying the next interruption. This mirrors free mobile game monetization.

However, this is only a patent application; many never become products. The filing names no specific Xbox game or rollout. Microsoft recently began testing free, ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming for Insiders, but those ads play before sessions and do not interrupt gameplay. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball stated he personally believes interrupting gameplay "would be bad." The patent suggests the opposite direction.

Industry peers have explored similar models. EA launched EA Advertising in June for dynamic placements in Madden NFL and EA Sports FC, and added ads to UFC 4 replay moments in 2020 before removing them after backlash. A game pausing for ads would likely face similar resistance.
