NCAA officials have green‑lit a new split‑season format for Division I men’s soccer, moving the national tournament to spring 2027‑28. The change will see teams play 18 matches from late August to Thanksgiving and up to 10 from mid‑February to the tournament, aiming to ease student‑athlete schedules.

The committee cited student‑athlete welfare as the main driver. Fewer midweek games should cut missed class time, while extended recovery periods promise a safer, more balanced competition. Washington coach Jamie Clark welcomed the shift, hoping it will spark fresh excitement for the sport.

Transfer rules also shift: the window will now last a single 15‑day stretch after the College Cup, down from two periods totaling 45 days. The adjustment aligns with the new calendar and may influence roster planning.

This overhaul marks a significant structural change for college soccer, reshaping training cycles, academic calendars, and postseason logistics across the nation.
