USL Super League Shifts to Spring-Fall Calendar Aligning with NWSL

The USL Super League will flip its calendar beginning in 2027, shifting from fall-to-spring to a spring-to-fall schedule that aligns with the NWSL. The change follows the league's second season concluding with Lexington SC winning the final in extra time. President Amanda Vandervort cited the need to collaborate better within North American soccer and prepare for the 2031 World Cup in the United States.

The calendar shift addresses previous concerns about loan deals and player movement between leagues. College players will now sign with teams at season's start rather than midway through. This alignment could facilitate an inter-league cup competition potentially launching in 2028, which would serve as a pathway to the Concacaf W Champions Cup. That regional competition will also reformat to single-calendar years starting in 2027.

U.S. Soccer leadership participated in broader discussions about ecosystem alignment, bringing together the USL Super League, NWSL, and the forthcoming WPSL Pro. Vandervort emphasized the league's mission remains "more soccer in more communities," focusing on underserved markets rather than competing directly with the NWSL.

The transition includes an abbreviated 2026 fall season running from August 15 to December 12 with eight teams. Spokane Zephyr FC folded in late May after two seasons, though its ownership group continues operating its USL men's team. The USL Players' Association confirmed ongoing collective bargaining negotiations tied to the scheduling changes.
