Major League Soccer has announced a 14-game Sprint Season for 2027 to bridge the calendar gap before transitioning to a summer-to-spring format. The season will run from February to May, featuring intra-conference matchups where each club plays seven home and seven away games.

This condensed format will determine playoff qualifiers for the Eastern and Western conferences, with the top eight teams from each conference advancing to single-elimination brackets. The conference champions will then face off in the 2027 MLS Cup. Despite the shortened season, teams can still qualify for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and Leagues Cup.

The league currently operates on a February-to-November schedule but announced in November its shift to align with global soccer calendars. Commissioner Don Garber called this transition "one of the most important decisions in our history," emphasizing that the new format will strengthen clubs' global competitiveness and create better opportunities in the transfer market.
