Ohio State QB Luke Fahey Gets Chance vs USC

Ohio State true freshman Luke Fahey is competing to make his first career start for the Buckeyes against USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Starting quarterback Julian Sayin has been sidelined "indefinitely" by an injury to his throwing arm, and Fahey replaced him two weeks ago at Indiana. Coach Ryan Day has not yet said whether Fahey or sophomore Tavien St. Clair will start.

Day praised Fahey's intangibles. "He has a moxie about him. He has a competitiveness about him," Day said. "We're always looking for quarterbacks who are just obsessed with being great, and I think when you get around Luke, you can quickly see how important it is to him."

Fahey's family has deep ties to Ohio State dating back to the 19th century. His great-grandfather, Edward Gorman, enrolled at Ohio State in 1898, and his wife's brother, Walter "Rink" Barrington, quarterbacked the Buckeyes from 1906 to 1908. Fahey's father, Stephen, grew up with a strong allegiance to Ohio State, and his grandmother Rosemary had long dreamed of attending the school. Stephen recalls watching Ohio State win the national title after the 2014 season with Luke, then 7 years old.

Luke, like former Buckeye Rex Kern, stands just 5-foot-11. His high school coach at Mission Viejo, Chad Johnson, called him "the best quarterback" he has coached, ahead of 2018 first-round NFL draft pick Josh Rosen. Fahey led Mission Viejo to a state championship as a sophomore and passed for more than 7,000 yards in his high school career.
