MLS Extends Summer Transfer Window to Align with Europe

Major League Soccer is extending its secondary transfer window into September for the 2026 season. The window will now run from July 13 to Sept. 2, aligning its conclusion with top European leagues. This move aims to give MLS clubs a better chance to acquire high-quality international talent ahead of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, following a trend of big-name signings like Son Heung-Min and Thomas Müller in 2025.

The shift continues MLS's broader push to synchronize its calendar with global soccer, following November's announcement of a summer-to-spring schedule starting in 2027. However, that major change still awaits approval from the Major League Soccer Players Association. For 2026, the league also set roster compliance deadlines and removed certain trade and loan restrictions, offering clubs more roster flexibility.

This alignment should help MLS teams compete for top talent against European clubs during the summer market. It also simplifies the process for players considering a move to North America. The key question is whether this adjustment, alongside the future calendar change, will accelerate the league's growth and global appeal, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching.
