JDT break world record with 109-match unbeaten run

Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) broke the world record for the longest men's domestic league unbeaten streak on Friday, claiming a 3-0 win over Kuching City to notch their 109th straight league game without defeat. The record had stood for 32 years, set by Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas at 108 matches from 1989 to 1994. JDT equaled it on the final day of last season with a record 14-1 win over Kelantan, while sealing a 12th consecutive national title.

The club's dominance began when Crown Prince of Johor Tunku Ismail Idris took over in 2012, merging state teams into a single club and investing heavily in players and facilities. JDT have won four domestic quadruples in a row and lifted the 2015 AFC Cup, though critics argue they have simply bought their success.

Their last league defeat came in April 2021 against Terengganu; since then they have won 100 and drawn nine. The streak's closest shave came in May 2022, when Bérgson's 88th-minute equalizer salvaged a 2-2 draw against Sri Pahang.

The club has also faced scrutiny after FIFA suspended seven players, including three JDT stars, over falsified citizenship documents.
