Penguins acquire Nick Robertson from Leafs

Toronto sent forward Nick Robertson to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, just before the NHL free‑agency window opened at noon ET. The Leafs had tendered a $1.8 million qualifying offer earlier in the week, preserving his restricted free‑agent status, but chose to transfer his rights to the Penguins.

Robertson’s NHL journey began when former Leafs GM Kyle Dubas selected him 53rd overall in the 2019 draft. He never secured a regular top‑line spot, slipping into a bottom‑six role and enduring healthy scratches for two seasons. A trade request surfaced last summer, and after switching agents to Pat Brisson, the move finally materialized under new GM John Chayka.

Last season proved Robertson’s most productive, tallying 16 goals and 32 points in 78 games. With arbitration rights intact, he can negotiate a new deal in Pittsburgh or become a trade chip as the offseason accelerates. The Penguins acquire a proven scorer who could fill a middle‑line void immediately.

Toronto clears a roster logjam and recoups a future asset, allowing John Chayka to pursue players better suited to a faster, top‑six system. Losing Robertson also frees up cap space tied to his qualifying offer, giving the Leafs flexibility as they chase a playoff spot in the tightly contested Eastern Conference.
