The Pittsburgh Penguins have committed to their future by signing forward Ville Koivunen to an eight-year contract valued at $32 million. The deal, which carries an annual salary of $4 million, locks up the 23-year-old restricted free agent for an extended period.

This significant investment underscores Koivunen's perceived importance to the Penguins as they transition through the later stages of their veteran stars' careers, including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. Koivunen, originally from Finland, was acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes in March 2024.

During the 2025-26 season, Koivunen recorded two goals and five assists in 39 games for the Penguins. He also demonstrated his potential in the AHL playoffs, where he contributed four goals and five assists in nine games for Wilkes-Barre, helping the team reach the conference finals.
