Defenseman Zach Werenski, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, wants to stay with the Columbus Blue Jackets long-term but emphasizes the team's need to become a contender. With two seasons left on his contract, Werenski stated that playoff success and team progress are crucial for him to consider re-signing beyond the 2027-28 season.

Werenski clarified that he did not demand a trade and that his earlier comments about not planning to sign an extension were misunderstood. He expressed transparency in his conversations with GM Don Waddell and a desire to resolve speculation before training camp. Last season, Werenski recorded 81 points, tying a franchise record for assists and achieving consecutive 80-point seasons, a feat matched only by NHL legends.

The Blue Jackets have not made the playoffs since 2020. Despite a strong mid-season turnaround under coach Rick Bowness, the team faltered in the final stretch. Werenski acknowledged the team's need for a stronger push and a better start to the upcoming season, which begins October 1st against Buffalo, with seven of the first nine games at home.
