Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski captured the Norris Trophy on Tuesday, edging out Colorado's Cale Makar and Buffalo's Rasmus Dahlin for the league's top all-around defenseman honor. The award marks Werenski's first Norris after finishing as runner-up last season, while Makar seeks his third trophy following last year's victory.

Werenski posted exceptional numbers during his 10th NHL season, recording 22 goals and 59 assists for 81 points while averaging 26:37 of ice time per game. His point total ranked second among defensemen league-wide, and he tied for third in goals at his position. Werenski also shared the lead in even-strength goals (18) with Washington's Jakob Chychrun, demonstrating his two-way impact.

All 10 of Werenski's NHL seasons have come with the Blue Jackets, where he holds franchise records for assists (330) and ranks second in points (465). The Michigan native added Olympic gold with Team USA at the Milan Cortina Games in February, becoming just the sixth American to claim the Norris Trophy.

Edmonton's Evan Bouchard, who led all defensemen with 95 points, surprisingly finished fourth in voting. Despite the statistical dominance, voters favored Werenski's complete game and leadership in Columbus's rebuild, making him the franchise's first major individual award winner.
