Five clubs from Mexico's second division have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and Liga MX regarding promotion and relegation. The clubs filing the appeal are Club Universidad de Guadalajara, Club Atlético La Paz, Club Atlético Morelia, Cancún FC, and Club Deportivo de Zacatecas.

This comes after a CAS ruling last September that initially paved the way for the return of promotion/relegation for the 2026-27 season. Promotion and relegation were paused in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a lawsuit by ten second-tier teams.

Despite the previous CAS decision, Liga MX regulations for the upcoming season state that no clubs will be relegated from Liga MX or promoted from the second division. This contradiction prompted the latest appeal. Previously, second-division clubs could apply for promotion eligibility, but a rule requiring a minimum of four eligible teams was never met.
