The Chargers secured Derwin James Jr. through a three-year, $75.6 million extension that makes him the NFL's highest-paid safety once again. The deal, announced Tuesday, carries $57.5 million guaranteed and resets the market at $25.2 million per year, surpassing the contract Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton signed in 2025. James entered the final year of his previous deal after earning his fourth All-Pro honor last season.

General manager Joe Hortiz flagged James as a priority all offseason, and the team got the deal done as OTAs opened. After a forgettable 2023, James rebounded under defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who deployed him in the nickel. Over the past two seasons, James totaled 7.5 sacks, his most productive pass-rushing stretch.

With Minter now the Ravens' head coach, first-year defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary inherits James as the defensive centerpiece. O'Leary praised James's energy and work ethic, saying he is excited to get started. The Chargers need him healthy and productive to keep their defense among the league's best.
