Cowboys Rookie Ezeiruaku Undergoes Hip Surgery

Dallas Cowboys pass rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku underwent hip surgery five weeks ago to repair a labrum tear, according to a source. The second-round pick from Boston College could miss until training camp, though he's expected to participate in walkthroughs and the June minicamp. The surgery comes as the Cowboys transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme under new coordinator Christian Parker.

Ezeiruaku, who led college football with 17.5 sacks in his final year at Boston College, recorded just two sacks in his rookie season with the Cowboys. Despite modest numbers, coach Brian Schottenheimer believes the 23-year-old can develop into a star. In his first NFL season, Ezeiruaku tallied 40 tackles, a forced fumble, seven tackles for loss, and 43 quarterback pressures.

The timing creates challenges for Dallas as they search for pass-rushing help through the draft and free agency. The Cowboys have cooled on re-signing last year's sack leader Jadeveon Clowney, seeking better fits for Parker's scheme. Besides Ezeiruaku, only James Houston remains from last year's pass-rushing corps, while Dante Fowler, Sam Williams, and Payton Turner head to free agency.
