Tremaine Edmunds is leaving the Chicago Bears, the team releasing the veteran linebacker to create $15 million in cap space days before free agency begins.

Edmunds, 27, signed a four-year, $72 million contract as a free agent in 2023 and was set to enter the final year of his deal. Chicago granted him permission to seek a trade on February 25th, signaling his potential departure. His 2026 cap hit was $17.9 million, including a $13.9 million base salary and a $1 million roster bonus.

The Bears' decision follows a busy week. They sent wide receiver DJ Moore and a fifth-round pick to the Bills for a 2026 second-rounder, and center Drew Dalman retired unexpectedly. Combined, these moves free up an estimated $44 million in cap space for Chicago.

Edmunds was a key contributor, leading the Bears with 112 tackles and nine passes defensed last season despite missing four games with a groin injury. He also recorded 13 tackles in the playoffs. His release marks a significant roster change for a team aiming to rebuild its defense while managing a massive cap situation.
