Thailand plans to tighten oversight of the gold-trading industry, including online transactions and physical bullion, as the government seeks to curb money laundering, scams and other financial crimes. The Bank of Thailand and the Ministry of Finance will work with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) to draft new regulations requiring stricter know-your-customer checks and transaction reporting for gold shops and digital platforms. Authorities said the move aims to close loopholes exploited by criminal networks using gold's high value and portability to move illicit funds.

The Gold Traders Association has been consulted on the framework, which may include mandatory licensing for online dealers and real-time reporting of large purchases. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin emphasized the need to protect the financial system's integrity while supporting legitimate businesses. The proposed rules are expected to be finalized within months, aligning Thailand with international standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Industry participants have expressed cautious support, noting compliance costs but acknowledging the necessity of enhanced transparency.
