Scarlets Post Third Straight £2.1m Loss Amid WRU Restructuring Plans

Scarlets have reported a £2.1m loss for the 2024-25 season, marking their third consecutive year of losses exceeding £2m. The Welsh region's financial results, covering the period to June 2025, show a slight improvement from the previous £2.6m deficit. However, turnover fell from £11.3m to £10.2m, with gate receipts, sponsorship and WRU funding all declining.

The club implemented 10% cuts to operating expenses, reducing the wage bill from £8.24m to £6.94m. A new share issue raised £940,000, but debt remains above £10m, owed primarily to the WRU and Carmarthenshire county council. Scarlets continue to owe £2.6m to the council for the Parc y Scarlets ground.

WRU plans to reduce professional clubs from four to three by 2028-29 create uncertainty for the region. Scarlets are in the final stages of signing the Professional Rugby Agreement (PRA), which would help repay £4.8m in Covid-related loans. Chairman Simon Muderack acknowledged the challenging environment but expressed confidence in the club's future.

The pending PRA agreement represents Scarlets' pathway to financial stability, though questions remain about how the WRU's restructuring will ultimately affect Welsh regional rugby. The club's refusal to commit to the original PRA while negotiating this new deal highlights tensions in Welsh rugby governance.
