Ferrari's executive chair John Elkann directed engineers to apply the Italian group's motoring roots to ocean racing, resulting in the 100ft foiling yacht Hypersail scheduled to launch next year. Designed as a carbon fibre monohull, the vessel aims to break the Jules Verne record for the fastest circumnavigation, currently 40 days, 10 hours, 45 minutes set by Sodebo Ultim 3. Hypersail aims to complete the circumnavigation entirely self-sufficiently using solar panels, wind turbines, and crew-generated energy.

Chief technology officer Matteo Lanzavecchia, who also leads vehicle engineering for Ferrari's sports cars, describes the vessel as a "laboratory" for energy management technology. The yacht features technology transferred from Ferrari's road cars, including a winch-by-wire system derived from the 12Cilindri Manuale and a rear e-axle from the Luce hypercar. Professional sailor and naval engineer Enrico Voltolini leads the project, noting the challenge of ensuring consistent performance in rough seas.

Executive chair John Elkann acknowledged the company's EV foray as "an unnecessary risk" but emphasized the need to "do something that has never been done.".
