Honda has replaced the project leader of its Formula 1 power unit programme as it seeks to improve performance in the 2026 era. Effective 1 October 2026, Yoichiro Fukao will succeed Tetsushi Kakuda as Large Project Leader (LPL) of Honda Racing Corporation's F1 Power Unit development. Kakuda, who has led the programme to date, is moving on as part of a planned transition.

Honda stated the change aims to accelerate power unit development and ensure a smooth transfer of technical expertise to the next generation of engineers. Fukao, currently Assistant LPL and Head of the Software Division, will take over leadership. Honda has struggled with performance and reliability in the new 2026 regulations, qualifying for additional development support.

The company hopes the leadership change will help capitalise on an overhauled power unit for 2027. Following a difficult start to 2026, Honda received extra power unit help in May beyond the original ADUO system. Discussions involving FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Aston Martin's Lawrence Stroll, and Fernando Alonso have explored further revisions to the ADUO upgrade system, with Mercedes and Red Bull Ford Powertrains open to adjustments.
