IONNA Expands Fast Charging Footprint Across US Retailers

The IONNA joint venture is significantly expanding its footprint, bringing its high-speed Rechargeries to over 350 Circle K locations across the US. This buildout joins existing partnerships with other major fuel and convenience chains like Sheetz, Wawa, and Casey’s. This expansion directly addresses the need for reliable public charging infrastructure outside of proprietary networks.

Public charging remains a fragmented ecosystem, especially when compared to the established dominance of Tesla’s Supercharger network. Currently, the US and Canada host nearly 80,000 plugs across roughly 17,500 fast-charging sites. Of those, NACS connectors—the standard for most new EVs—account for 42,879 plugs across fewer than 5,000 locations.

While Electrify America maintains a large presence, its NACS integration remains minimal, offering only 32 NACS plugs across four sites. IONNA’s growth is therefore important for non-Tesla EV owners needing access to the newer, smaller NACS standard in third-party environments. Rivian and Mercedes-Benz are also developing separate networks, adding further complexity to the charging map.

Ultimately, the success of these joint ventures like IONNA will determine how quickly charging accessibility catches up to EV adoption rates nationwide. Consumers face a confusing mix of CCS1 and NACS ports across dozens of competing operators.
