GM adds universal charger app and V2G update

General Motors rolled out two updates for its EV lineup on Tuesday. The headline feature, Energy Pass, is a universal charging interface that aggregates stations from multiple networks into a single app. At launch it supports Tesla, Electrify America and IONNA, with EVgo and ChargePoint slated for addition soon. The move expands usable public chargers for GM owners across the United States.

Beyond convenience, GM also pushed a firmware upgrade that unlocks full vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability for its Energy Home systems. V2G lets a parked car discharge power back into the home or local grid, effectively acting as a backup generator during outages. Adoption requires a compatible home charger and a supporting vehicle, keeping the feature niche for now.

The combined rollout addresses two pain points for EV buyers: limited charger access and lack of grid integration. By folding major networks into Energy Pass, GM reduces range anxiety without requiring separate accounts. Meanwhile, V2G capability could appeal to homeowners seeking resilience, potentially adding a new revenue stream for utilities. Both initiatives signal GM’s push to make its electric fleet more practical today.
